Velu Nachiyar: Tamil Queen Who Defied British Rule, Led Armed Resistance, and Inspired Generations with Courage, Strategy, and Patriotism
Velu Nachiyar was the first Indian queen to wage war against the British East India Company, earning the title “Veeramangai” (Brave Woman) among Tamils.
Born on January 3, 1730, in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, Velu Nachiyar was trained in martial arts, horse riding, and weaponry, and was fluent in Tamil, French, English, and Urdu. She married Muthu Vaduganatha Periyavudaya Thevar, the king of Sivaganga. After he was killed in battle against the British in 1772, Velu Nachiyar fled with her daughter and regrouped in Dindigul, where she formed alliances with local rulers and resistance fighters.
She spent nearly eight years planning her retaliation, gathering intelligence and building an army. With support from Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore, and the Maruthu Brothers, she launched a successful campaign to reclaim Sivaganga in 1780, becoming its monarch. Her strategic brilliance included deploying Kuyili, a female commander who famously sacrificed herself by setting fire to the British arsenal.
Velu Nachiyar ruled Sivaganga until 1790, after which her daughter Vellacci succeeded her. She passed away on December 25, 1796, in Sivaganga.
Her legacy is celebrated for female leadership, military strategy, and early resistance to colonialism. In 2008, India honored her with a commemorative postage stamp. Today, she stands as a symbol of courage and patriotism in Tamil history.
