Born on October 30, 1908, in Pasumpon village, Ramanathapuram district, he hailed from the Mukkulathor (Thevar) community and was deeply influenced by spiritual and nationalist ideals. Educated in Madras, Thevar joined the Indian National Congress but later aligned with Subhas Chandra Bose’s Forward Bloc in 1939, advocating for more radical approaches to independence.

He was known for his fierce opposition to British rule, especially the Criminal Tribes Act, which unfairly targeted certain communities. His activism helped repeal the act, earning him immense respect among marginalized groups. Thevar was elected to the Lok Sabha three times, representing the interests of southern Tamil Nadu with passion and integrity.

Beyond politics, he was revered for his spiritual depth, discipline, and commitment to social justice. He emphasized unity among castes and communities, and his legacy continues to influence Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. His birthday, October 30, is commemorated annually as Thevar Jayanthi, drawing thousands to his memorial in Pasumpon.

Muthuramalinga Thevar passed away on October 29, 1963, but remains a towering figure in Tamil history—celebrated for his courage, leadership, and unwavering dedication to India’s freedom and social upliftment.
