Dr. Zakir Husain: Visionary Educationist, Jamia Millia Builder, Bharat Ratna Recipient, Third President of India, Champion of Knowledge and Integrity

Dr. Zakir Husain was a distinguished educationist, statesman, and the third President of India, remembered for his deep commitment to learning and nation-building.

Dr. Zakir Husain was born on 8 February 1897 in Hyderabad. He pursued higher studies at Aligarh Muslim University, where he later earned a PhD in Economics. His passion for education led him to co-found the National Muslim University in Aligarh, which eventually became Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi, a pioneering institution dedicated to progressive education and cultural integration.

Husain firmly believed that education was the cornerstone of India’s development. His vision emphasized character-building, moral responsibility, and the blending of modern knowledge with traditional values. As an academic, he worked tirelessly to shape Jamia Millia Islamia into a center of excellence, nurturing generations of students with ideals of service and integrity.

His career extended beyond education into public service. He served as Governor of Bihar (1957–1962), then as Vice President of India (1962–1967), before becoming the third President of India in 1967. Tragically, his tenure was cut short when he passed away in office on 3 May 1969, making him the first Indian President to die while serving.

Dr. Zakir Husain was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in recognition of his immense contributions. His life remains a shining example of how intellectual pursuit and public service can merge to uplift society. His legacy continues through Jamia Millia Islamia and the countless students inspired by his ideals.
