Periyar E.V. Ramasamy was a revolutionary thinker, social reformer, and political activist who radically transformed Tamil society in the 20th century. Born in 1879 in Erode, Tamil Nadu, he began his public life in the Indian National Congress but soon grew disillusioned with its caste-based politics. In 1925, he founded the Self-Respect Movement to challenge Brahminical dominance, caste oppression, and religious orthodoxy.

Periyar believed that true liberation could only come through rational thought, self-respect, and the rejection of superstition. He advocated fiercely for women’s rights, inter-caste marriages, and universal education—especially for communities historically denied access. His speeches and writings were bold, uncompromising, and deeply rooted in logic and human dignity.

He also played a key role in shaping the Dravidian movement, which redefined Tamil identity and politics.
