Lala Lajpat Rai: The Lion of Punjab Who Roared for Freedom, Education, and Justice Against British Colonial Rule in India
Lala Lajpat Rai (1865–1928) was a towering figure in India’s struggle for independence, revered as the “Lion of Punjab” for his fearless activism and fiery patriotism. Born in Dhudike, Punjab, he was deeply influenced by the ideals of nationalism and social reform from an early age. A lawyer by profession, Rai’s eloquence and conviction made him a powerful voice against British colonial rule.
He was one of the prominent leaders of the Lal-Bal-Pal trio—alongside Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal—who championed assertive nationalism and self-rule. Rai’s contributions extended beyond politics; he was a prolific writer, social reformer, and educationist. He founded institutions like the Servants of the People Society and played a key role in establishing Punjab National Bank and DAV College, promoting indigenous enterprise and education.
Lajpat Rai traveled extensively, including to the United States, where he studied Western political systems and advocated for India’s freedom. His writings, such as Unhappy India and England’s Debt to India, exposed the economic and moral injustices of colonialism.
In 1928, during a protest against the Simon Commission—which had no Indian representation—Rai was brutally lathi-charged by police. He succumbed to his injuries soon after, famously declaring, “Every blow on my body will be a nail in the coffin of British imperialism.”
His martyrdom galvanized the youth, including revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh, and cemented his legacy as a symbol of courage, intellect, and unwavering commitment to India’s freedom.
