Begum Rokeya (1880–1932) was a pioneering feminist, educator, and writer who championed women's rights and education in colonial Bengal

Born in 1880 in Pairaband, Rangpur (now Bangladesh), Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain defied the conservative norms of her time to become one of South Asia’s earliest advocates for gender equality. Raised in a traditional Muslim household, she was denied formal education but learned Bengali and English privately with her brother’s help. Her husband, Sakhawat Hossain, supported her intellectual pursuits and encouraged her activism.

Begum Rokeya’s most influential work, Sultana’s Dream (1905), is a feminist utopian story envisioning a world ruled by women, where peace and science flourish. Through satire and imagination, she challenged patriarchal structures and promoted the idea of female empowerment. She also founded the Sakhawat Memorial Girls' School in Kolkata in 1911, which provided education to Muslim girls—an act considered radical at the time.

Her essays and speeches consistently emphasized the importance of education for women as a path to liberation. She argued that ignorance, not religion, was the root of women’s oppression. Rokeya also established the Anjuman-e-Khawatin-e-Islam (Islamic Women’s Association) in 1916 to promote social reform and women’s welfare.

Begum Rokeya passed away on December 9, 1932, but her legacy endures. She is celebrated annually in Bangladesh on Rokeya Day, and her life continues to inspire movements for gender justice across South Asia
