Birbal and the Case of the Invisible Donkey: A funny story about how birbal found the missing royal donkey of the king Akbar
A Royal Headache
One fine morning in the Mughal court, Emperor Akbar sat with a frown deep enough to plant potatoes in. He looked so serious that even the royal parrot stopped talking.
"Birbal!" Akbar thundered. "Someone has stolen my favorite donkey!"
"The royal donkey, Your Majesty?" Birbal asked, trying not to laugh. The court froze. Everyone knew Akbar was unusually fond of his donkey—he called it 'Bahadur' and claimed it once kicked a tax collector into honesty.
"Yes! And I want it back before sundown. Find the thief—or you'll be polishing the royal shoes with goat milk for a month!"
Birbal, always calm and a bit too amused, bowed and said, "As you command, Jahanpanah."
The Great Dusty Plan
Birbal strolled to the marketplace and announced, "The emperor’s invisible donkey has been stolen! Anyone who even thinks of the donkey will turn into a goat!"
Within minutes, the entire city was chanting, "I am not thinking of the donkey. I swear I’m not!"—while glancing suspiciously at each other. Naturally, this odd chant made it to the ears of the real thief.
At night, Birbal waited in a dark alley near the stables with a bucket, a candle, and a very bored camel.
Sure enough, a nervous man tiptoed in and whispered, “Donkey? You can’t be invisible now! Don’t betray me!” as he attempted to sneak Bahadur out.
Birbal leapt out. “Aha! Thought you could outsmart me? You just got caught by your own guilt—and also by the camel, who stepped on your foot.”
Donkey Business as Usual
The next day, Birbal proudly presented the donkey—and the thief—to Akbar.
"How did you do it?" Akbar asked, patting Bahadur like it was a golden retriever.
"I used the ancient art of reverse-psychology paranoia and a camel with excellent timing," Birbal said.
Akbar laughed so hard he nearly fell off his throne. "Birbal, you're a genius!"
Birbal winked. “Anything to avoid goat milk shoe polish, Jahanpanah.”
And so, peace returned to the empire—at least until the royal chicken went missing.
